116: The Mad Bomber
**This episode originally aired as a Patron bonus episode in October 2020.**For 16 years New York City was under attack by a serial bomber. In the 1940s and 50s The Mad Bomber placed dozens of bombs around New York City in theatres, businesses, train stations, and libraries. The bombs left an entire city on edge for years as the police desperately searched for their creator. Thanks to some smart thinking by investigators the Mad Bomber case used one of the very first criminal psychological profiles created by a psychiatrist and opened the door for a whole new investigation technique.FURTHER READING:How New York’s First Terrorist Led to the Birth of Criminal Profiling | The New YorkerUnmasking the Mad Bomber | HistoryMad Bomber George MeteskyDecades before Cesar Sayoc, Mad Bomber George Metesky terrorized New York CityFrom 'Unabomber' To 'Mad Bomber,' A Look At Past Serial BombersRetroPod EpisodeMost Notorious PodcastThe Birth of Criminal Profiling - WSJIn the 1950s, the “Mad Bomber” planted 33 bombs around New York CityThe Bomber's Grievances Came to Light in a Series of Letters; PAPER RECEIVED DETAILED NOTES Text of His Correspondence to Journal-American Tells of Bitterness Over Injury Suspect's First Letter Sent From Westchester Final CommunicationsTerror in the Age of Eisenhower-----------------------------------------------Like the show?
